Why this has to be right
Filing an FCC vanity application costs $35, and that fee is not refundable if the call sign turns out not to be available after all. So “is this call sign really available” isn’t a nice-to-know — getting it wrong costs a real, specific amount of money. This page explains the rule we use, in plain language, and shows the FCC data behind it so you can judge it for yourself rather than just take our word for it.
The short version
A call sign is available today if there is no license on file for it, or if every past license on file for it has been out of force for at least two full years. That two-year window is a real FCC rule (47 CFR 97.19) — a holding period, sometimes called a grace period, that runs from the date a license stops being in force, not from the day someone stops using the call sign. Below that window, the call sign is still spoken for even though nobody currently holds an active license for it.
What starts the two-year clock
The FCC's license records carry a status code, and which date starts the clock depends on which status the record carries. Getting this pairing wrong is the single most common way a simple lookup gets the answer wrong — see “The four-year mistake” below for the specific trap.
License expired
The clock starts on the license's expiration date. Available the day after expiration date + 2 years.
License cancelled or terminated
The clock starts on the date the FCC recorded the cancellation or termination — not the expiration date on the record, which for a cancelled license is usually not a real date at all (more on that below). Available the day after cancellation date + 2 years.
License still shows “active,” but past its expiration date
This one surprises people: the FCC leaves a license marked active through the entire renewal grace period, even after its printed expiration date has passed. It's still held, on the same two-year clock as an expired license, until that grace period actually closes.
License active and not yet expired
Held indefinitely. No countdown running — nothing to calculate.
No license on file at all
Never issued. Available right now.
The four-year mistake
Here's the trap a naive check falls into. When a license expires and its two-year grace period runs out without a renewal, the FCC administratively cancels it — and stamps that cancellation record with a date that is itself expiration date + 2 years. We confirmed this pattern holds across every one of 600,086 expired license records in the FCC's data: 100% of them.
So if a tool naively read that cancellation date and then added another two years on top of it — treating “cancelled” the same way it treats “expired” — it would land on expiration date + four years, not two. That single mistake hides roughly half of the call signs that are genuinely available today, and it's an easy mistake to make because the two dates on the record really do look similar. We anchor each status on the date that actually applies to it, which avoids the trap.
Two more traps a simple lookup can miss
One call sign, more than one license record
Nearly 84,000 call signs in the FCC's amateur database — nowhere close to a rare edge case — have more than one license record tied to them, usually from a licensee re-registering or changing status over time. If any one of those records is still held, the call sign is still held, no matter what the other records say. A lookup that only checks the first or most recent record can report a held call sign as free.
Marked “active,” already past due
Just over 82,000 licenses in the data are marked active while already past their printed expiration date — almost all of them (99.8%) within the last two years, meaning they're sitting inside that renewal grace period described above. Treating every “active” record as held forever, without checking the date, would hide a real slice of the call signs that are actually already available or about to be.
How we checked this against what actually happened
A regulation is one thing; how the FCC actually behaves is another, so we checked the rule above against real re-grants — cases where a call sign was released and genuinely picked up again by a different person. Looking at 81,804 of those real re-grants:
For call signs that had simply expired, the two-year-from-expiration date was beaten early in only 2 cases out of 53,023 — 0.004% of the time. We label those results high confidence. For call signs that were cancelled mid-term rather than expired, real re-grants happened sooner than the two-year-from-cancellation date about 6.7% of the time, so those results are labeled medium confidence instead of high — the rule still holds most of the time, but we want you to know it's a softer guarantee. Terminated licenses are rare enough in the data that we don't have enough re-grants to characterize them precisely, so those are labeled low confidence. The rule is also independently consistent with the FCC's own regulation, 47 CFR 97.19(c).
What this can't know
The FCC allows a handful of person-specific exceptions to the two-year holding period — most notably, a former holder reclaiming their own former call sign, or a close relative of a licensee who has passed away. Nothing in a bulk license snapshot can tell whether either of those applies to a specific call sign, so this tool can't shorten the estimate for them; if one might apply to you, that's worth asking the FCC about directly.
This is also only ever as fresh as the last time we pulled data from the FCC. It's a best-effort estimate from a periodic snapshot, not a live query against the FCC's own systems — the FCC is always the final authority on whether a specific call sign can actually be issued to you.
